Family Matchday Experience at the FIFA World Cup: Turkiye vs Paraguay at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium
Three matches into the FIFA World Cup 2026, and one thing has become clear: every match has its own personality.
Qatar vs Switzerland was memorable because it marked the return of the FIFA World Cup to the Bay Area for the first time since 1994.
Austria vs Jordan brought an incredible atmosphere and gave us our first experience with Category 1 seats.
But Turkiye vs Paraguay delivered something different altogether - the drums, the chants, the passion from Turkiye and Paraguay supporters.
This was the most electric atmosphere we've experienced so far at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Arriving Early for Matchday
For our third World Cup match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, we followed the same strategy that has worked well throughout the tournament: arrive early and enjoy the full matchday experience.
We arrived shortly after the gates opened at 5:00 PM and immediately noticed a difference from the first two matches. The Fan Zone was packed. Supporters from Turkiye and Paraguay filled the area with flags, jerseys, scarves, music, and nonstop excitement. The energy was contagious long before kickoff.
After walking through the Fan Zone, taking photos, grabbing dinner, and picking up another matchday scarf for the collection, we made our way to our seats. The atmosphere was already building.
Paraguay Supporters Stole the Show
I've attended professional soccer matches in multiple countries and countless sporting events over the years, but Paraguay's supporters created one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced. The drums never stopped. The chants echoed throughout the stadium. Flags waved from every corner of the stands.
Paraguay supporters occupied large sections behind the goal and throughout the stadium, and they sang, danced, and cheered for the full 90 minutes. What made it even more special was how that energy spread throughout the crowd. By the end of the match, we found ourselves dancing and cheering right along with them and celebrating Paraguay's victory.
Even if you arrived without a rooting interest, it was impossible not to get caught up in the passion.
A Full House in the Bay Area
With an announced attendance of 68,827, this was the largest crowd we've experienced through our first three World Cup matches.
The stadium felt completely alive. The concourses were packed. The Fan Zone was buzzing. And for the first time during this tournament, it truly felt like the entire world had arrived in the Bay Area.
One of the things I've enjoyed most about the World Cup is seeing supporters from around the globe come together through a shared love of the game: Different languages, Different cultures, Different traditions, One sport.
That's what makes the FIFA World Cup unlike anything else.
Final Result: Paraguay 1, Turkiye 0
The match itself was competitive throughout, with both teams creating opportunities. With Paraguay scoring in the first minute of the game and then getting a red card just before halftime, Turkey had the bulk of the chances, but couldn’t find a breakthrough.
In the end, Paraguay earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory and sent their supporters into celebration after the final whistle.
While the result was important for Group D, the atmosphere surrounding the match was what made the evening unforgettable.
This was one of those games where the experience around the match became just as memorable as the action on the pitch.
The Cherry on Top: USA Returns to the Bay Area
As exciting as the atmosphere was, the biggest news of the night for local soccer fans came after the final whistle. Paraguay's victory officially confirmed that the United States Men's National Team will play its Round of 32 match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on July 1.
As a family attending all six Bay Area World Cup matches, this was something we had been hoping for since the tournament began. The opportunity to watch Team USA play a World Cup knockout match just minutes from home is exactly the kind of moment that makes hosting the FIFA World Cup so special.
The Bay Area will now host not only group stage matches but also a United States knockout-round match in front of a packed crowd. We can't wait!
Final Thoughts
Three matches down. Three matches to go.
Each game has been different. Each crowd has brought its own personality. Each match has created memories our family will never forget. But if Turkiye vs Paraguay taught us anything, it's that the FIFA World Cup is about much more than what happens on the pitch.
It's about the people. The drums. The chants. The passion. And the moments that bring fans from around the world together through the beautiful game.
The FIFA World Cup has been everything we imagined and so much more.
