TWA Hotel Review: A Smart Airport Stay That Completely Changes Your Travel Day

Airport hotels usually serve one purpose and that is convenience. But every once in a while, you find one that actually becomes part of the travel experience and that’s exactly what the TWA Hotel does.

We’ve stayed at the TWA Hotel twice during Summer trips to Europe (June 2022 and most recently June 2024) using the hotel as a strategic stop at the end of our Europe trips. Instead of flying back into San Francisco and dealing with a 1.5–2 hour drive home to the Sacramento area, we routed through New York, stayed overnight at JFK, and caught a connecting flight the next morning. This also works well for tryiong to secure flights with miles, as flying in and out of JFK typically has more flights and award seats available.

That one decision made the entire return journey significantly easier and the hotel itself made it even better.

Hotel Overview

Location: As Seamless as It Gets for Air Travel

The TWA Hotel is located directly at JFK Airport, connected to Terminal 5 via the AirTrain. There’s no shuttle, no rideshare, no added logistics. You land, follow the signs, and you’re there.

The AirTrain runs 24/7 and connects all terminals in minutes, making it one of the easiest airport hotel transfers you’ll find anywhere. And for families, especially after a long international flight, that simplicity is huge.

First Impressions: Not Your Typical Airport Hotel

From the moment you walk in, it’s clear this isn’t a standard airport stay. The hotel is built inside the restored TWA Flight Center, originally designed by Eero Saarinen, and fully embraces its mid-century aviation design. It feels like stepping back in time - nostalgic, unique and intentionally designed.

Instead of heading straight to your room, you’ll likely spend time exploring the space, it’s part hotel, part experience.

Rooms: Quiet, Comfortable, and Surprisingly Memorable

We’ve stayed both times in a Deluxe Double Queen Room with Runway View, and it’s the room type we’d recommend for families, that want a view. The same category rooms are available without a view, but when you’re staying at a hotel airport, plane spotting is part of the fun and intrigue.

The layout of our room was simple and functional - two queen beds, modern/clean design and large windows overlooking the runway

What really stands out, though, is the soundproofing. Even with planes taking off right outside, the rooms are completely quiet once the windows are closed. After a long-haul flight, that level of quiet makes a big difference.

The runway view adds an extra layer to the stay, especially for kids. Watching planes taxi and take off turns what would normally be a basic overnight stay into something more engaging.

Having stayed here twice, the consistency is what stands out. It delivers the same level of comfort and ease every time.

Amenities: More Than You Expect at an Airport Hotel

This is where the TWA Hotel separates itself from almost every other airport hotel. Instead of offering just the basics, it creates an experience.

Highlights include:

  • Rooftop infinity pool overlooking the runway

  • The “Connie” airplane turned cocktail lounge

  • Aviation exhibits throughout the property

  • A large fitness center and multiple lounges

There’s even luggage storage available if you arrive early or have time before your flight, which adds flexibility to your travel day .

It’s one of the few airport hotels where you might actually want to spend time outside your room.

Dining: Easy, On-Site, and Travel-Friendly

Dining options are varied and convenient, which matters after a long travel day.

You’ll find:

  • Full-service dining (including the Paris Café)

  • Casual food hall options

  • Coffee and grab-and-go

After flying internationally, having everything in one place simplifies the experience.

Overall Impression: Why This Stay Worked So Well

The biggest takeaway from our stays at the TWA Hotel is how much it simplifies the travel experience.

Landing from Europe, walking directly to the hotel, getting a full night of rest, and catching a flight the next day completely changes the way a long trip ends. Instead of pushing through exhaustion, it gives you a chance to reset before heading home.

From a practical standpoint, the hotel delivers where it matters most:

  • Direct airport access with no additional transportation

  • Extremely quiet rooms, even with runway views

  • A unique, memorable design that adds to the experience

  • Strong amenities for an airport hotel

There are tradeoffs however. It typically comes at a premium price point, it’s not designed for exploring New York City (easily), and it leans more toward convenience than traditional luxury. But that’s also what makes it effective.

For us, using New York as a transition point, rather than flying straight back to the West Coast, allowed us to break up a long travel day, avoid a late-night drive from San Francisco, and make the entire return journey more manageable. That strategy, combined with the ease and comfort of the hotel, is what makes this stay stand out.

It’s not just an airport hotel, it’s a smarter way to end a trip.
