Amsterdam Marriott Hotel Review: A Reliable, Well-Located Base for Exploring the City
Amsterdam is one of those cities where your location can completely shape your experience when visiting. With canals, museums, and neighborhoods spread across the city, we wanted a hotel that would put us in a central, walkable area while still keeping things simple for our first stop on a multi-city Europe trip.
That’s what led us to the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel.
Located right across from Leidseplein, the hotel gave us easy access to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and the surrounding canal district. At the same time, it offered the reliability and comfort we were looking for to start the trip.
For us, it came down to finding the right balance between location and convenience and this property delivered.
Hotel Overview
Location: One of the Best Areas for First-Time Visitors
The hotel is located near Leidseplein, which turned out to be one of the most convenient areas to stay in Amsterdam.
From here, you can:
walk to the Rijksmuseum and Museumplein in under 10 minutes
access the canal district easily
hop on trams right outside the hotel
It’s central without feeling overly crowded, and for a first visit, it puts you within reach of most major sights.
First Impressions: Familiar and Efficient
The Amsterdam Marriott feels exactly how you’d expect, a well-run, high-traffic city hotel that’s built for efficiency. Check-in was smooth, the lobby had a steady flow of guests, and everything felt organized and predictable. It doesn’t try to be overly boutique or unique, but that consistency is part of the appeal. You can expect Marriott Bonvoy amenities here and an M Lounge, where breakfast can be found, as well as snacks and drinks throughout the day
Rooms: Practical and Comfortable for a City Stay
Rooms here felt modern, clean, and functional. In a city like Amsterdam, and for Europe in general, many hotels are smaller and more compact and having a bit of extra space and a predictable layout makes a difference. For us a two bed room setup worked well for us and offered comfortable beds, efficient use of space, enough room to settle in after a full day and a nice view of the city.
It’s not a luxury, oversized room experience, but it’s practical and dependable.
Amenities: Simple, but Everything You Need
The hotel focuses on core amenities rather than extensive resort-style features.
You’ll find:
a fitness center
concierge services
on-site dining
on-site laundry
M Lounge
This is a hotel designed to support your time in the city, not compete with it.
Dining
There are two main dining locations on-site, as well as a club lounge.
Bar TWLV is a cosmopolitan bar in the heart of Amsterdam, where globally inspired dishes meet crafted cocktails. From laid-back brunches to vibrant nights, every visit is a moment to savor and every sip tells a story.
Midtown Grill is steakhouse inspired by the tradition of the quintessential American steakhouse, serving steaks complemented by a curated wine list and craft cocktails.
M CLub Lounge: Breakfast was a strong and convenient option, especially for starting early days of sightseeing. The selection included: pastries and breads, hot items and coffee and juice
While Amsterdam has plenty of dining options, having a reliable breakfast on-site in the M lounge (Marriott Bonvoy Platinum and up) simplifies mornings, especially with kids.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth It for Families?
The Amsterdam Marriott Hotel is a strong, practical choice for families visiting Amsterdam for the first time.
It’s not about luxury or uniqueness, it’s about location, reliability, and making your time in the city easy. And in that sense, it delivers exactly what you need.
The location near Leidseplein makes everything simple. You can walk to major attractions like the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, access public transportation right outside the hotel, and return to a comfortable, familiar setup at the end of the day.
That ease of movement changes the experience, especially with kids. Instead of spending time figuring out logistics, you’re able to focus on exploring the city.
The hotel itself reflects what you expect from a Marriott in a major European city: consistent, well-run, and dependable. It may not have the character of a boutique property or the “wow” factor of a luxury stay, but it provides a level of comfort and predictability that works extremely well at the start of a trip.
For us, it came down to location and convenience and this property delivered on both.
