Hotel Review: The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki

Some hotels are simply places to sleep. Others become part of the destination itself. The Royal Hawaiian, affectionately known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific”, firmly belongs in the second category.

During our stay, it quickly became clear why families, celebrities, and travelers have been drawn here for nearly a century.

After busy travel days exploring Oahu, returning to the calm gardens and oceanfront setting felt like stepping back into a quieter version of Waikiki. For families especially, it offers something rare: Historic charm combined with unbeatable convenience.

Hotel Overview

Opening in 1927, The Royal Hawaiian helped define luxury tourism in Hawaii and remains one of the most recognizable hotels in the world thanks to its distinctive pink Spanish-Moorish architecture and beachfront setting.

Situated directly on one of the widest stretches of Waikiki Beach, the property occupies approximately 14 acres between Kalākaua Avenue and the ocean, placing guests within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, and activities while still feeling surprisingly secluded.

Despite being surrounded by larger modern towers, the resort feels intimate once inside. Palm trees shade winding pathways. Historic courtyards open into lush gardens. Ocean breezes flow through open spaces. It’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of one of Hawaii’s busiest visitor areas.

Guests stay across two primary sections:

  • Historic Wing: The original 1927 building featuring classic architecture and old-Hawaii character.

  • Mailani Tower: A more modern tower offering contemporary rooms and upgraded ocean views.

Amenities at the hotel include:

  • Direct Waikiki Beach access.

  • Two pool options (including family access at Helumoa Playground shared with Sheraton Waikiki).

  • Cultural activities like lei making and hula lessons.

  • Fitness center and spa services.

  • Beach cabanas and water activities.

The balance between history and modern comfort is what makes the hotel stand out. You’re not just visiting Waikiki. You’re experiencing part of its story.

Accommodations

Rooms at The Royal Hawaiian reflect two very different styles depending on where you stay.

Historic Wing accommodations lean heavily into the hotel’s heritage:

  • Traditional furnishings.

  • Classic architectural details.

  • Garden or courtyard views.

Some travelers specifically seek this experience for its nostalgic charm.

The Mailani Tower offers a more contemporary feel with brighter interiors and sweeping ocean views.

During our stay, we were upgraded to the Mailani Tower (Marriott Bonvoy Titanium) and had booked a base Garden View Room in the Historic Wing. Your experience may vary, but out Bonvoy status and being repeat guestes here, helped secure an upgrade, especially during Christmas week. Our room in the Mailani Tower was perfect for waking up to Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head framed outside the window never got old.

Across both sections, guests can expect:

  • Comfortable bedding.

  • Spacious bathrooms.

  • Mini refrigerators and coffee service.

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi for Marriott Bonvoy members booking direct.

For families, location becomes the real luxury. Being able to walk directly from your room to the beach, pool, or nearby dining without coordinating transportation made daily planning incredibly easy.

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite Benefits

As Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite members, loyalty benefits are always part of how we evaluate a stay, especially at luxury resorts.

Unlike Ritz-Carlton properties, The Royal Hawaiian does provide meaningful elite recognition, as a Luxury Collection Hotel. One of the biggest advantages during our stay was daily breakfast, which made mornings simple and stress-free before heading out to explore Oahu.

For families, this benefit adds real value. No searching for breakfast spots. No early decision fatigue. Just a relaxed start to the day overlooking Waikiki Beach.

For breakfast at Surf Lani, this benefit included a $20 per person for two people which was their Continental Breakfast, but we were able to upgrade for a small fee to signature breakfast items on the menu like the famous Pink Pancakes.

Other benefits may include:

  • Room upgrades when available.

  • Late checkout based on availability.

  • Complimentary in-room internet access when booking direct through Marriott Bonvoy.

It’s worth noting that benefits can vary depending on booking method and occupancy levels, but overall recognition felt consistent with expectations for a Luxury Collection property.

Dining

Dining at The Royal Hawaiian leans into both classic Waikiki nostalgia and modern Hawaiian cuisine.

The standout experience for many guests begins each morning at Surf Lanai with breakfast overlooking Waikiki Beach. This quickly became a daily highlight for us with ocean views, pink umbrellas lining the sand and and a relaxed pace that set the tone for the day. The famous Pink Palace Pancakes have earned their reputation for a reason.

For evenings and casual moments, we enjoyed a meal at Mai Tai Bar, which is located steps from the sand and is one of Waikiki’s most iconic sunset locations with live music, ocean breezes, and Diamond Head views that create an atmosphere that feels unmistakably Hawaii.

The resort also celebrates Hawaiian culture through experiences like the Ahaʻaina Royal Hawaiian Luau, blending storytelling, cuisine, and traditional performances into an immersive evening experience rooted in the history of Helumoa , land once associated with Hawaiian royalty.

And while dining on property is excellent, the location also makes it incredibly easy to walk to nearby favorites across Waikiki.

Final Thoughts

If Waikiki represents energy and convenience, The Royal Hawaiian offers a way to experience it without feeling overwhelmed.

It’s historic without feeling outdated. Elegant without feeling formal. And perfectly positioned for families wanting both relaxation and exploration.

During our stay, mornings started slowly with breakfast overlooking the ocean. Afternoons blended beach time with exploring Honolulu. And evenings ended with sunsets steps from the lobby. That balance is difficult to replicate anywhere else on Oahu.

For travelers wanting classic Hawaii charm, beachfront access, and unmatched walkability, The Royal Hawaiian remains one of Waikiki’s most timeless stays and it always our first choice when staying in Waikiki.
