Hotel Review: Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Oahu

Disney Aulani Resort Review: A Magical Family Resort Experience in Hawaii During the Holidays, including a look at the rooms, pools, Disney characters, dining, Hawaiian cultural experiences, and what families should know before booking.

There's something special about combining a family vacation in Hawaii with a little Disney magic.

If you've visited Disneyland or Walt Disney World, you know Disney has a way of creating memorable experiences for families, but imagine taking that same attention to detail and combining it with beautiful beaches, tropical landscaping, Hawaiian culture, and year-round sunshine, all without the theme parks. That's essentially what you'll find at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, located in Ko Olina on the western coast of Oahu.

During our December 2025 family vacation, we spent four nights at Aulani over Christmas as part of a longer Hawaii trip that also included stays at The Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki and The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay on the North Shore.

Each resort offered something completely different, and Aulani was our opportunity to enjoy a more family-focused resort experience filled with swimming pools, waterslides, Disney characters, Hawaiian cultural activities, and some much-needed downtime. And while Aulani has plenty to offer, it's also important to understand what you're paying for, what activities are included, and whether a Disney resort is the right choice for your family vacation.

Here's our experience staying at Disney's Aulani during Christmas 2025.

Hotel Overview

Opened in 2011, Aulani is Disney’s standalone Hawaiian resort designed specifically to celebrate local culture alongside family storytelling. From arrival at the open-air Hale Aloha lobby, the difference is noticeable. Ocean breezes flow through carved wooden beams inspired by traditional Hawaiian canoe houses. Artwork throughout the resort reflects authentic Hawaiian legends and craftsmanship developed alongside local cultural advisors. Characters appear regularly throughout the property, but they feel like fellow vacationers rather than staged performances.

Amenities across the resort include:

  • Multiple pools and splash zones.

  • A lazy river winding through the property.

  • Rainbow Reef private snorkeling lagoon.

  • Direct lagoon beach access.

  • Laniwai Spa.

  • Kids clubs and teen programming.

  • Cultural activities including storytelling, crafts, music, and language experiences.

Many experiences are included with your stay, allowing families to fill entire days without leaving the resort. For busy holiday travel periods especially, that built-in entertainment becomes invaluable.

Location: Welcome to Ko Olina, Oahu

One of the first things to understand about Aulani is its location. The resort is situated in Ko Olina, a beautiful resort community along Oahu's western coastline, approximately 30–45 minutes from Honolulu's airport, depending on traffic conditions.

Unlike Waikiki, where you're surrounded by hotels, restaurants, shopping, and busy streets, Ko Olina offers a quieter, more resort-focused atmosphere. The area is known for its landscaped grounds, walking paths, golf course, beautiful sunsets, and four protected ocean lagoons.

Aulani sits directly along Ko Olina Lagoon 1, giving guests convenient access to a sandy beach and calmer swimming waters than some of Oahu's more exposed beaches. For families traveling with children, having access to a protected lagoon is a big advantage.

However, there's an important trade-off. Ko Olina is relatively removed from many of Oahu's popular attractions, particularly those in Honolulu, Waikiki, and the North Shore. If you're planning to spend most of your vacation sightseeing around the island, you'll need to factor in transportation and driving time.

My travel tip: Aulani is a resort where you'll want to spend time enjoying the property. If your itinerary involves leaving early every morning and returning late at night, I'd probably recommend staying somewhere more central and saving Aulani for a more resort-focused portion of your trip.

The Resort: Disney Magic Meets Hawaiian Culture

What makes Aulani different from other Disney properties is its emphasis on Hawaiian culture and traditions. This isn't a typical Disney theme park resort filled with castles, rides, and attractions. Instead, Aulani incorporates Hawaiian storytelling, art, music, architecture, and cultural experiences throughout the property, with Disney characters and entertainment mixed in. From the impressive open-air lobby to the beautifully landscaped grounds, the resort is designed to celebrate Hawaii while delivering the familiar Disney attention to detail.

You'll find Hawaiian artwork, cultural references, and opportunities to learn more about the islands throughout the property. And while Disney characters are certainly part of the experience, they don't completely dominate the resort.

In many ways, Aulani feels like a family beach resort first, with the added benefit of Disney entertainment, theming, and storytelling. That's an important distinction, especially for families visiting Hawaii for the first time. There's plenty of Disney magic to enjoy, but Aulani isn't meant to replace a visit to Disneyland or Walt Disney World.

It's a different kind of vacation.

Pools, Waterslides, and the Lazy River

If there's one area where Aulani really stands out for families, it's the extensive pool and water recreation complex. Unlike a traditional hotel with one or two swimming pools, Aulani features multiple pools, waterslides, splash areas, and a lazy river, all surrounded by tropical landscaping. For families traveling with children, this is easily one of the biggest reasons to stay at the resort.

Waikolohe Pool and Waterslides

Waikolohe Pool is the resort's main family swimming pool, located in the heart of Waikolohe Valley. Surrounded by lush landscaping, waterfalls, and nearby waterslides, it's one of the central gathering places for families throughout the day. The resort features two main waterslide experiences: Volcanic Vertical, a body slide, and Tubestone Curl, a tube slide.

For kids who enjoy swimming and water activities, there's plenty to keep them entertained without ever leaving the property.

Waikolohe Stream: The Lazy River

One of Aulani's signature attractions is Waikolohe Stream, the resort's lazy river. Guests can float along the winding waterway on inner tubes, passing waterfalls, rock formations, and tropical landscaping. It's a fun way to relax between swimming, waterslides, and other activities. And unlike visiting a Disney theme park, you don't have to worry about Lightning Lane reservations or trying to fit dozens of attractions into a single day. You can simply enjoy the resort at your own pace.

Ka Maka Grotto and the Other Pool Areas

Ka Maka Grotto offers another beautiful swimming area with an infinity-edge pool overlooking Ko Olina lagoon and the Pacific Ocean. The views are particularly appealing around sunset.

For younger children, the resort also offers Keiki Cove, a water play area, and Menehune Bridge, an interactive water playground with slides and other features. Aulani also has quieter areas for guests who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere away from the main family pools. One thing worth keeping in mind is that Aulani is an extremely popular family resort, particularly during school breaks and holidays. With so many families visiting during these periods, the pools and surrounding seating areas can become busy.

My travel tip: I recommend planning at least one full resort day without any off-property activities. Aulani has enough pools, waterslides, and activities to easily keep a family entertained, and there's no reason to rush through everything.

Ko Olina Lagoon: A Beach Vacation Without Leaving the Resort

Beyond the swimming pools, Aulani offers direct access to one of Ko Olina's beautiful ocean lagoons. The lagoon provides a different experience from many of Oahu's more exposed beaches. Its protected setting generally offers calmer swimming conditions, making it especially appealing for families with children. You can spend the day swimming, relaxing on the sand, or enjoying the ocean while still having convenient access to the resort. Beach chairs and certain beach amenities are available for resort guests, while additional equipment and activities may require separate rentals. One of the advantages of staying at Aulani is being able to move between the beach and the pools throughout the day. There's no need to load up the car or organize a separate beach excursion. Everything is within walking distance and when traveling with kids, that kind of convenience is something I always appreciate.

Disney Characters, Entertainment, and Family Activities

Of course, one of the biggest reasons families choose Aulani over other Hawaii resorts is the opportunity to enjoy Disney experiences without visiting a theme park.

Throughout the resort, guests can find Disney character meet-and-greets, entertainment, and family activities. Characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Moana, and other Disney favorites may appear in their Hawaiian-inspired outfits at designated times and locations. Schedules can change, so I'd recommend checking the resort's daily activity schedule or mobile app rather than assuming specific characters will be available. Beyond character greetings, Aulani offers Hawaiian cultural activities, storytelling, crafts, and entertainment throughout the resort.

Aunty's Beach House

Aunty's Beach House is the resort's supervised children's activity center, designed primarily for kids ages 4–12. It provides opportunities for children to participate in organized activities while parents enjoy some downtime. Reservations may be required, and availability can be limited, particularly during busy periods. For families with older children, I'd take a closer look at the available activities before booking. Not every program is designed for teenagers, although the pools, waterslides, beach, and other resort amenities can still be enjoyable for older kids.

Disney PhotoPass

Aulani also offers Disney PhotoPass services, giving families opportunities to have photos taken around the resort and during select Disney experiences. We purchased PhotoPass during our stay, which was a nice addition to the trip. As someone who enjoys photography, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so having opportunities for family photos is always something I appreciate. Of course, PhotoPass is an optional expense, so it's worth reviewing the available packages before purchasing.

Accommodations: Deluxe Studio Ocean View

For our four-night stay , we booked a Deluxe Studio with an Ocean View in the Disney Vacation Club Villas section of Aulani.

Traveling as a family of four, we generally look for accommodations that provide enough space for everyone while also offering conveniences that make traveling with kids easier.

One thing worth knowing before booking Aulani is that the resort offers both traditional hotel rooms and Disney Vacation Club villas. The villas include Deluxe Studios as well as larger one-, two-, and three-bedroom accommodations. You don't have to be a Disney Vacation Club member to book a villa, and we reserved ours as a regular paid hotel stay.

The Deluxe Studio offers some of the conveniences of a vacation villa without requiring a larger suite. These accommodations feature a queen bed, a queen-size sleeper sofa, a kitchenette, and a private balcony or porch. The kitchenette includes a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and basic amenities, which can be especially useful when traveling as a family. At a resort where dining prices can add up quickly, even having a place to store drinks, snacks, and breakfast items can make a difference.

We chose the Ocean View category to take advantage of Aulani's beautiful Ko Olina setting. Our stay was during Christmas, one of the busiest and most expensive travel periods of the year.

My travel tip: Before booking, compare the cost of a traditional hotel room with a Disney Vacation Club Deluxe Studio. Depending on the price difference, having a kitchenette and the villa-style layout may be worth considering, especially for longer stays.

Dining

Dining at Aulani ranges from memorable character experiences to casual options perfect for families and as with most destination resorts in Hawaii, dining is an important consideration when planning your stay.

Aulani offers several restaurants, casual dining locations, poolside options, and quick-service outlets. However, food and beverage prices can add up quickly, especially when traveling with kids.

Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands

Makahiki is one of the resort's signature restaurants, offering character breakfast and other dining experiences. For families interested in Disney character dining, it's one of the more popular reservations at Aulani.

‘AMA‘AMA

For a more upscale dining experience, ‘AMA‘AMA offers oceanfront dining overlooking Ko Olina lagoon. It's a good option for families looking for a special occasion dinner or a more leisurely restaurant experience.

Off the Hook

Off the Hook is one of the resort's poolside dining options, making it convenient for grabbing something to eat or drink without leaving the pool area.

During our stay, we had two charges from Off the Hook totaling $361.08.

That's a good example of how quickly resort dining and beverages can add up over several days.

Ulu Cafe and Mama's Snack Stop

For more casual meals, Ulu Cafe offers grab-and-go options, while Mama's Snack Stop provides quick bites and snacks near the pool area. These are convenient options when you don't want to spend time sitting down for a full restaurant meal.

The Olelo Room

The Olelo Room is another option for food and drinks, with an emphasis on the Hawaiian language incorporated into its design.

Dining Outside the Resort

One advantage Aulani has over more secluded properties like Turtle Bay is that there are some restaurants and shops within walking distance in the Ko Olina resort community, like MonkeyPod and other restuarants across the street. The options are nowhere near as extensive as Waikiki, but having a few places outside the resort is convenient. For even more variety, Kapolei is a short drive away and offers additional dining and shopping.

My travel tip: Consider picking up drinks, snacks, and breakfast items before arriving at Aulani. If you're staying in a Disney Vacation Club studio, having a kitchenette makes it easier to keep a few essentials in your room.

You don't necessarily need to eat every meal at the resort, and over several days, those savings can add up.

Our Character Breakfast at Makahiki

One of the Disney experiences we booked was the character breakfast at Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands, for the day after Christmas.

Character dining is one of those experiences that Disney does especially well, combining a restaurant meal with opportunities to interact with favorite characters. At Aulani, Makahiki offers a sit-down breakfast with multiple courses and a selection of entrees. Note that has changed over the years and during previous stays prior to covid, this was a breakfast buffet.

Unlike a traditional buffet, the breakfast is served as a structured dining experience, with Disney character interactions incorporated into the visit. For families who want a dedicated character experience, this can be a convenient option rather than relying entirely on the resort's daily character appearance schedule. For our family of four, the character breakfast cost $246.64 (December 2025). That's a substantial amount for breakfast, but character dining at Disney resorts typically comes at a premium.

Personally, I think the value comes down to how much your family enjoys the character experience. If meeting Disney characters is a highlight of your vacation, it can be worth including in your plans. On the other hand, if you're simply looking for a good breakfast, there are more economical options.

My travel tip: Make character breakfast reservations as early as the booking window allows, especially during Christmas, spring break, and summer. Popular dining experiences can fill up quickly. I secured my reservation exactly 45 days out right when they became available for our dates at 12:00 AM Hawaii Standard Time.

KA WA‘A Luau: A Hawaiian Cultural Experience

Another experience we included in our holiday plans was KA WA‘A – A Luau, Aulani's signature Hawaiian luau.

We booked Preferred Seating with the evening beginning at 5:00 PM on the resort's Halawai Lawn.

The experience celebrates Hawaii's history and traditions, particularly the importance of canoe exploration and the Polynesian voyagers who reached the Hawaiian Islands. The approximately three-hour program combines Hawaiian storytelling, music, dance, cultural activities, and a buffet-style dinner. Before the main performance, guests have opportunities to enjoy cultural demonstrations, including flower arranging and paʻi ʻai, the preparation of pounded taro. The evening also includes a traditional Hawaiian chant, followed by dinner and a live performance exploring the history and legends of Hawaii.

The buffet features Hawaiian-inspired dishes, local ingredients, seafood, kid-friendly selections, and desserts.

What makes this experience especially convenient is that it takes place directly at the resort. You don't have to arrange transportation, drive to another part of the island, or worry about getting back to your hotel afterward. However, it's also a significant additional expense. For our family of four, Preferred Seating cost $841.47 including taxes and fees (December 2025).

That's certainly not inexpensive, and it's something I'd recommend factoring into your vacation budget before booking.

My travel tip: Compare the General and Preferred seating options, check performance dates ahead of time, and make reservations early. The luau isn't offered every night, and availability can be limited during busy holiday periods.

Is Disney's Aulani Worth It for Families?

This is probably one of the biggest questions families have when considering Aulani. And I think the answer really depends on what you're looking for from your Hawaii vacation.

Aulani isn't inexpensive.

Between the room rates, dining, parking, character experiences, luau, and other optional activities, the overall cost can become significant, but you're also getting something different from a traditional beachfront hotel. The pools, waterslides, lazy river, protected lagoon, Disney characters, family entertainment, and Hawaiian cultural experiences are all part of the appeal.

For families who enjoy Disney and plan to spend several days at the resort, those amenities can make Aulani a worthwhile option. On the other hand, if most of your trip involves exploring Honolulu, visiting Pearl Harbor, hiking, or sightseeing around the island, I'd probably recommend staying somewhere more central. You're paying a premium for the Aulani experience, so it makes sense to actually enjoy it.

Who I'd Recommend Aulani For

Aulani is especially appealing for families who:

  • Enjoy Disney characters and family entertainment.

  • Want access to multiple pools, waterslides, a lazy river, and a protected beach lagoon.

  • Prefer spending several days enjoying a resort rather than sightseeing every day.

  • Have younger children who enjoy character experiences and supervised activities.

  • Want to combine a Hawaii beach vacation with Disney's family-friendly amenities.

  • For families with older kids and teenagers, I'd recommend looking more closely at the activities and amenities.

There's still plenty to enjoy, but some of the character experiences and children's programming are geared toward younger guests.

Overall Impression

Disney's Aulani offers a unique family resort experience in Hawaii. The combination of beautiful beachfront surroundings, extensive swimming pools, waterslides, Disney character experiences, and Hawaiian cultural activities makes it different from many other resorts on Oahu, but I think it's important to approach Aulani with the right expectations.

This isn't Disneyland or Walt Disney World, and it's not designed to be. You're not coming here for theme park rides or an endless schedule of attractions. You're coming for a family resort vacation with a little Disney magic mixed in.

The biggest considerations are the cost, location, and how much time you plan to spend enjoying the property. For our family, including Aulani as part of our December 2025 Oahu vacation gave us the opportunity to experience a different side of Hawaii before continuing to the North Shore.

And that's one of the things I appreciate most about family travel. Not every day needs to be filled with sightseeing, tours, and activities. Sometimes it's just as memorable to spend the day swimming, enjoying the beach, meeting a favorite Disney character, or simply relaxing together because the luxury isn't necessarily about where you stay. It's about choosing the experiences that matter most to your family and making memories together.
