Hotel Review: Cavallo Point Lodge at the Golden Gate Bridge
Located in the heart of Golden Gate National Park, Cavallo Point Lodge is a historic hotel that offers stunning views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
We had a lovely birthday stay at this wonderful hotel over a long weekend earlier this year and enjoyed dining at Farley, walking around downtown Sausalito and hiking around the property.
Here is a review of our stay and what you need to know if you're planning a trip here, including how to get access to Virtuoso amenities that include daily breakfast, $100 hotel credit and other value-added benefits.
Hotel Overview
Cavallo Point is a luxury resort hotel located in Sausalito, California, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Cavallo Point offers a variety of accommodations, including historic rooms and suites, contemporary cottages, and spacious villas. All of the rooms and suites are beautifully appointed and feature modern amenities with some rooms featuring breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The hotel also features a full-service spa, a fitness center, a swimming pool, a renowned cooking school and a variety of dining options, including a fine-dining restaurant and a bar.
In addition to its luxurious accommodations and amenities, Cavallo Point is also a great place to explore the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The hotel is located just steps from the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Area Discovery Museum and offers a variety of activities and tours, such as hiking, biking, kayaking, and fishing.

- These rooms are located in the historic buildings that were once part of Fort Baker. With scenic city vistas and expansive green spaces, these impeccably restored landmark accommodations blend Colonial Revival character with luxury-focused amenities. They feature authentic turn-of-the-century details, spacious front porches, and panoramic windows that open to San Francisco Bay breezes.
- Contemporary Lodging:
- Showcasing spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, these hillside contemporary rooms and suites seamlessly blend environmental sensitivity with modern style. Each room and suite has a private entrance, floor-to-ceiling windows, a cozy fireplace, and is constructed to the highest standards of green architecture.
For our recent stay, we were in a Contemporary Two Queens room that featured a lovely view of the Golden Gate Bridge. I had originally booked a regular Two Queen Bed Room and was upgraded to a room with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge (Virtuoso room upgrade benefit, based on availability at check-in)
The room was perfect for our family of four and had two queen beds, bamboo furnishings, with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The room location was up on the hill from where the Historic buildings are located and can be a steep climb up for those with mobility concerns.
Dining
Cavallo Point offers a variety of dining options including:
- Farley
- Farley offers an artistic twist on farm to fork for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is where you can enjoy your free daily breakfast (when booking a Virtuoso rate or if it is included in your rate)
- Sula and Sula Lounge
- Sula offers exquisite dining in an elegant, yet stylish setting, blending Cavallo Point’s heritage with an inspired, modern feel. Executive Chef Michael Garcia presents an ingredient-driven menu with Mediterranean cooking influences alongside the property’s own homegrown flair.
- Sula Lounge is the perfect spot to start or anchor your evening, indulge in seafood-forward small plates, exquisitely tailored caviar, champagne service and carefully crafted cocktails.
Overall Impression
Cavallo Point is a beautiful and luxurious resort hotel that offers stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay. During the long weekend of our stay here, we enjoyed one day on property exploring the hotel and surrounding area going for a hike and then strolling through downtown Sausalito, where we enjoyed a nice dinner at The Spinnaker and the next day visiting San Franciso, where we went to the California Academy of Sciences.
One small minor issue we encountered was a mistake on our bill at checkout that, in my opinion, took too much effort on my part to resolve, especially for a luxury hotel. Long story short is that we had incorrect charges on our breakfast bill for our last morning; one charge for the breakfast we had (small bill since our Virtuoso benefit covered breakfast for two) and other charges that were over $1600 for breakfast alone. After pointing out that mistake and showing a picture of my receipt from that morning, I figured it would be taken care of, but was not until we stopped by as we were leaving just to ensure it was taken care of and get a final copy of the bill. It wasn't take care of yet and I had to assert that it had to be taken off now before I left and not until Monday morning.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Cavallo Point as it still close enough to San Francisco, but is very secluded and private. Farley is wonderful restaurant we enjoyed having a birthday dinner at and for breakfast every morning. I can say we would definitely stay here again for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation with a trip to the spa.
